9 Festive Family-Friendly Things to Do During the Christmas Holidays
Christmas can be a hectic time of year for everyone, but when your children are on their Christmas break, it can be even more difficult to keep them entertained and having fun while they're off school.
While they might not be old enough to do some Christmas activities on their own with friends, they can do some fun-filled Christmassy activities with the family instead. But you need to make sure that the things you choose to do are suitable for the whole family.
With this in mind, here are nine things you can do during the Christmas holidays that are perfect for the entire family, regardless of age, from going to the panto to doing some delicious Christmas baking.
1. Make some Christmas cards
Everyone loves giving and receiving Christmas cards, but they can be expensive, especially when you have children at school that your kids would like to give Christmas cards to as well. One of the most cost-effective ways of giving our festive cheer at Christmas is to make them yourself at home, so get your kids involved at the same time for a festive activity that can be done indoors.
2. Go ice skating
Ice skating isn't for everyone, granted. However, ice skating is the perfect activity to do at Christmas because the whole family can get involved. It can also be far cheaper than going to cinema as a family of four, making it an even more attractive activity to do at Christmas for families, whether ice skating is your thing or not.
3. Watch some Christmas movies
Snuggling down and wrapping up in a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate while you watch Christmas movies at home is a great way of getting the family together at Christmas. Not only is it free, but it's also super relaxing, which is what you want during your Christmas break.
4. Build a snowman...weather allowing
We all know that this activity is highly-unlikely at Christmas, but you never know! If the heavens open to drop copious amount of fluffy white snow at Christmas, then you should take every opportunity to wrap up and get outside to build a snowman with your children. You never know, it might be the one and only time you have the chance to build a snowman during the festive season.
5. Attend a Christmas light switch on
Christmas light switch-ons are becoming few and far between, what with budget cuts from local councils looking to save a buck. I say 'Hum Bug' to them. If there's a Christmas light switch on that's happening near you, whether it's in your local town or elsewhere, bring your children with you so they can experience the Christmas light switch on. Not only is it low cost, but it's also a fun-filled evening that can be enjoyed by anyone of any age - perfect for families looking to do something different this Christmas.
6. Visit a Christmas market
Christmas markets are everywhere. They're hosted by almost every city in the UK and they're perfect because they make you feel warm, fuzzy and festive, but without breaking the bank. you're in complete control of what you buy and what you ride on at those things, making for a cost-effective, family-friendly festive activity to do this Christmas.
7. Go & buy a real Christmas tree together
I know, a lot of people are team 'fake tree'. But we have always been team'real tree', even since I was a child. part of the whole Christmas experience was actually going to buy your Christmas tree every year. These days, there's far more going off at these Christmas tree farms than there were when I was a kid. You could easily spend all day there in these more modern times.
At least, most of these Christmas tree farms will have a cafe, so you can all hunker down in there for a bit and warm up with a delicious hot chocolate. Make it an experience and a tradition that your children will always remember and have fun doing. The whole family can go. If your parents normally have a real tree, then invite them along too and you can all go and get a tree together.
8. Bake some festive treats
If you don't normally bake, then the best time of year to do this is Christmas. Not only is it fun and cost-effective, when compared to visiting a coffee shop for a hot beverage and a slice of cake, but it gives your children something fun and festive to do, as well as teaching them a new skill.
Whether you make some simple sugar cookies and gingerbread men or get more advanced with the creation of a traditional Christmas pudding that you can set alight come Christmas day, get the whole family involved with some festive bakes this Christmas.
9. Attend a pantomime
Of course, it wouldn't be Christmas without going to a panto. I have been going to a pantomime every Christmas since I was four. The only year I missed was 2020, when Covid put a stop to the performance.
Even now, as a nearly thirty-year-old, I cannot do Christmas without going to the pantomime, making it the perfect Christmassy thing to do with your family, no matter the age range. From granny and granddad to four-year-old Timmy, everyone will go wild for a Christmas pantomime.
