6 Tips for Packing Away Your Christmas Decorations

The festive season has almost come to an end, and it's time for us to pack away all of our Christmas decorations until next year. But, is it just me, or is packing it away worse than getting it all out?!

Don't worry, I'm on hand to try and make sure that unpacking next year is a breeze, along with making packing away this year as easy as it comes. So here are my top six tips for packing away your Christmas decorations :)

1. Take pictures of everything in-situ

While this may seem a little silly, it's always a good idea to take some pictures so that you know what you've got and where everything goes. Not only does it make it easier to put out again next year, but it also reminds you of what you've got, so nothing is left behind in the loft or misplaced.

2. Take the opportunity to have a declutter

We can all go a little mad at Christmas, buying Christmassy ornaments, candles and the like without actually seeing if we have the storage space for any of it. Instead, when buying something new, look to get rid of something old or broken.

Take the opportunity to have a declutter and a purge of your Christmas decorations before getting ready to pack it all away. You'll thank yourself in future years when packing away and getting things out is far easier and stress-free, simply because you have less stuff to organise.

3. Clean everything, don't store candles in the loft & take the batteries out before storing

I like to make sure that our Christmas decorations are clean before storing them away for another year. Something else I will do before packing any Christmas decorations away is take any batteries out.

Whether it be lights or a light-up snowman, I will always take the batteries out of everything before I store it away for the next 12 months. As well as this, I also won't store candles in the loft, just in case we have a stellar summer with soaring temperatures (I can dream, can't I? Haha).

4. Put related decorations together

If they're similar or alike, then store them together. For example, we have two trees at Christmas: a real one in the living room and an artificial one in the dining room. When storing, we'll put all artificial tree decorations, including lights, together in the same box.

We will do the same for all of the decs that go on the real tree. I will then store anything that goes around the fireplace together, and I will also store all of our standing decorations together (like the Christmas moose, the nutcracker and our light-up Christmas gnome that sits on the landing).

If they're put up together, they'll get stored away together. On the other hand, you could store all red baubles together, for example. You could store all ceramics together or all the lights together - the way in which you group everything together is completely up to you!

5. Use clear bags & boxes

By using clear bags and boxes, you'll be able to see what's inside them without opening it up and having a good rummage - which can mess up your organisation. It's a great way of seeing what you have without getting anything out.

6. Label things

A simple-yet-effective way of seeing what you have, without having to get everything out is to label everything. This means that you won't have to actually buy new clear boxes or bags. You can label everything and anything, if it means you can identify what everything is and where it goes next year.
