Everything You Need for An At-Home Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea - a delicious lunch that has everything to offer, even down to a choice between a cup of tea and glass of champagne. But afternoon tea, when sought out from cafes and restaurants, can be costly. So how can you make your own afternoon at home? Her'es everything you'll need for the most authentic experience.

A pot of tea

Traditionally, afternoon tea is served with just that - tea. Just because tea is the go-to hot beverage choice, however, doesn't mean that you have to stick to that option. You could have a herbal or fruit infusion tea or a coffee instead. You could even choose something along the alcoholic side, but more on that at the end of this blog post!

A selection of finger sandwiches

Afternoon tea wouldn't be complete without a few delicious finger sandwiches. You can buy them in or make your own at home filled with your choice of cheese, ham or something a little more exotic. Opt for some smoked salmon and cream cheese or some thin-sliced beef and horseradish for an extra kick. Either way, you need some finger sandwiches for an at-home afternoon tea.

Some miniature sweet treats

Sweet treats are a crucial part of an afternoon tea. In fact, they're Tom's favourite part of an afternoon tea. He doesn't really eat the sandwiches, so I let him have the cakes as a compromise, haha.

I can see why they're his favourite bit. You can enjoy a sweet treat that doesn't break the bank or make you feel guilty. They're just the right size to satisfy the sweet tooth without going overboard.

Don't forget them when having an afternoon tea at home. Supermarkets will have a wide range of miniature desserts and cakes available, make sure you do your research.

Of course, scones, cream & jam

It wouldn't be an amazing afternoon, whether at home or otherwise, without the inclusion of some traditional scones. They can either be plain or fruit. Alternatively, you could even have a more fancy version, like almond and cherry.

Of course, you can't just enjoy them plain. You need to be have them with clotted cream and some delicious, proper jam or conserve. Don't scrimp when it comes to the ingredients needed to elevate a plain scone for your afternoon tea.

A glass of champagne, if you're feeling particularly fancy

If you're feeling really fancy, or if you have something to celebrate, then a glass of bubbly is a wonderful pairing to an afternoon tea. It's perfect if you're having a birthday or even a hen do! In fact, it might be the best way to get the party started.
