Blogmas Day 11 | How to Be More Security-Aware This Christmas
A new day and another festive post! Welcome to Blogmas day 11. I'm going to be publishing a Christmas blog post every single day on the run up to Christmas Day, so keeping checking back for some more festive content every day.
Today, I'm going to be giving you some hints and tips for how to be more security aware this Christmas, so as to protect your home and your belongings at one of the busiest time of year for burglars. But how can you do that? Let's take a closer look:
Keep the home secure
This one could go without saying, but it's far easier said than done when it comes to making sure that all of your doors, windows and garden gates are securely locked. Keep all entry points into the house, the garden and even the garage and/or shed locked, whether you're at home or out and about. You should also always set the alarm, if you have one. This can also be done when you go to bed, just for good measure.
Don't keep presents under the tree
This is exactly where burglars will look if they gain entry to your property. Not only should you not keep presents under the tree, but you should keep them very much out of sight, generally.
Don't leave a PS5 box somewhere it could be seen, whether it be the front or the back of the house, as someone could easily gain access to your garden. Only put your presents under the tree on Christmas Eve and then put them away after that.
Make your home look as though it's occupied
Set timers on lights so it looks like someone is home, even if you aren't. You can also buy devices that shine lights that emulate a television being on, without actually putting the telly itself on. If you're going out for a few hours and you don't have a timer, then just leave the light on for a while.
Dispose of packaging wisely
Whether this be before or after Christmas, make sure that you're breaking down your packaging carefully. This is to prevent burglars from targeting houses that clearly have new devices in the home. For example, conceal cardboard boxes used to package games consoles, designer handbags, mobile phones, tablets and more. Keep them in the house rather than outside where someone could rummage through your bins. Don't advertise your new valuables and think carefully about whether a box or bag could obviously make your house a target.
Be careful when getting deliveries
Where possible, go to the shop to collect packages rather than have loads of boxes and bags delivered to your home address, especially if you aren't likely to be in when they arrive. Either arrange to have them delivered when you know you're going to be in, or nominate a trusted neighbour to take the parcels for you. Where possible, I will always arrange to collect packages rather than have them delivered to my house, for this very reason.
Consider undergoing some security upgrades
If you don't have a house alarm, for instance, then have one installed or install one yourself. There are loads of DIY-install house alarms on the market these days, so do some research. You could also look to install security lighting, like motion-sensor lights on the front, side or back of the house.
This deters burglars as it can be attention-grabbing when a bright light suddenly comes on in the dead of night. Outdoor cameras are also a great deterrent, even they're dummies. If being broken into is a particular worry for you, which I'm sure it is for everyone, then it's in your best interests to do what you can to keep them out of your property and away from the belongings that you've worked so hard to acquire.
