Disney in Concert: The Sound of Magic

Earlier in June, Tom and I travelled over to the Birmingham Symphony Hall to see Disney in Concert: The Sound of Magic. You might well remember that we went to see a similar concert last year at the NEC, but that one was focused more on the 100 years of Disney and Disney music.

Whereas this one was a little more broad-brushed, although it did touch on the 100 year anniversary, of course! If you want to read about the Disney 100 in Concert that we attended last year, then you'll be able to read that blog post here

This time, it was a little different from the concert we saw last time. More so because it was simply the orchestra and the conductor, rather than the orchestra, the conductor, the singers, the dancers and everyone in between.

This concert was less like something you'd go along and sing along to and more like a performance that you attend just to listen to and enjoy the ambience and the atmosphere, much like when you go and listen to any performance involving an orchestra.

It had a totally different vibe and feel this time around, when compared to the performance we saw last year. It was an incredible thing to experience as a Disney fan. The orchestra were second-to-none. They clearly enjoyed playing the instruments and coming together to deliver such a well-rounded performance that sounded just like the recorded score, only better.

There were a few surprises along the way. Not all of the songs were played in a fashion that went one-by-one. There were a few mashups that you wouldn't think would work, but totally did work. Not to mention, they also put together a visual montage to go along with the music, which fit perfectly in time with everything the orchestra was playing.

It must be such an art to conduct an orchestra like that, in time all of the moving images that were playing behind them. What a skill it must be have to keep all of those orchestral elements in time and playing perfectly together.

Nut as impossible and as difficult it might seem, the Disney in Concert team executed it all seamlessly. I would continue to keep attending these concerts, every chance I get, even if they remain the same (which I don't think they will), because the experience was incredible and one that I will never get tired of.

If you're a huge fan of Disney, or have children who are fans of Disney, then this is the show for you. I'll likely go again next time around, so keep your eyes peeled for some advertising next year. No doubt they will tour again soon!
