5 of the Best Shows on (UK) Netflix

Everyone loves a great big Netflix binge, myself included. So, for those of you who have the time to spend watching all of these shows I'm going to include in this post, I hope you enjoy this post and the shows you could potentially end up binge watching with a bag of Kettle's crisps, a packet of Haribo and a tub of Ben & Jerry's.

Happy Valley

If you saw this on BBC One when it first aired, then you'll know exactly how captivating this programme really is. Full of drama, gore and emotion, it makes for a turbulent watch. With fantastic, award winning actors such as Sarah Lancashire and James Norton, you're in for an absolute treat. The writers of the show are also brilliant, providing viewers with a hard hitting, dramatic story line. With both series available to watch back to back, it makes for the perfect Sunday night binge. But be warned, it's not an easy watch. With Lancashire playing a take-no-crap Police Officer in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside, she has more connections to the main villain, played by Norton, than first meets the eye, and that's just season one ;) Get on this show ASAP because you will not be disappointed.

Doctor Foster

Another original BBC drama, airing back in 2014, the first season finally made it's way to Netflix. It's full of scandal, heartache and revenge. There aren't many episodes, but the story gets fully underway in the first five minutes of episode one. It's a show that keeps you guessing right up to the very end.

A doctor, well respected within their small community, goes to work one morning having borrowed her husband's scarf, only for her to get to work, hang the scarf up and spot a long blonde hair on it, sparking Doctor Foster (Suranne Jones) to believe that her husband (Bertie Carvel) is in fact having an affair. The rest of the series keeps you guessing at many things, is the husband having an affair? What is he really doing in the two and a half hours before he gets home from work? Who's in on his secretive to-dos? The mystery grows. The last episode is especially explosive, so it's one to keep watching!

Friday Night Dinner

Moving away from the BBC dramas, this one is a comedy. Although I know it's not going to be for everyone, it involves a relatively middle class, Jewish family who get together every Friday for dinner. However, the night very rarely runs smoothly, with a creepy next door neighbour (Mark Heap) who is afraid of his own dog and freakishly obsessed with the mother (Tamsin Greig), he is  constantly bringing trouble to their doorstep, making it hard for the family to sit down and actually have some dinner.

The father (Paul Ritter) also adds to the comedy of the show, making random but hilarious remarks, he simply speaks his mind, and spends most of the time with his shirt off, which everyone in the family hates! Sons Jonny (Tom Rosenthal) and Adam (Simon Bird) are constantly pranking each other, as well as stirring things with their usual immature antics, all aspects of the show and it's characters mix together to form the perfect concoction of comedic entertainment. Overall, its an easy watch and one to view with friends especially!

Black Mirror

You've probably heard everyone going on about this show, but there's a reason for that. Charlie Brooker, writer of the show, is an absolute genius in my eyes. Writing about all the things that could go wrong with developing technology, including Virtual Reality, TV Ads getting completely out of hand and the dangers of human cloning, it almost serves as a warning to the human race. With loads of different actors, some you have heard of and others you haven't, it makes for an interesting and thought provoking watch.

As well as the themes I've mentioned, there are also some very interesting slants on rating people on the internet, almost like how you'd rate an Uber driver and vice-a-versa. Only your rating depended on the house you live in, the car you drive or the healthcare you receive. Brooker also touches on the topic of online dating and how incredibly generated and fake it can all potentially get. Brooker's imagination runs wild so yours doesn't have to, but in all honesty, it does get you thinking about whether everything Brooker has written about could actually become a reality. Scary stuff!

The Crown

I know, you probably couldn't get anymore British than this, but I just had to include it. I binge watched the entirety of the episodes on there within a few days and it was worth every minute let me tell you! It gives a unique insight into the life of the royal family, dating back to the death of the Queen's father, George VI. Actors include the likes of Claire Foy, playing the Queen, Matt Smith, playing Prince Phillip, Vanessa Kirby, playing Princess Margaret and Victoria Hamilton (who is also in Doctor Foster), playing the Queen Mother. You won't be lost for acting talent and convincing performances. Each episode has been carefully researched by professionals and historians in order to create an accurate portrayal of the family at that time, so everything that happened in the series actually happened in real life. I for one cannot wait for the new season and I'm sure I'll be back on here raving about that one as well!
